SUNDAY GROUP ‘LIVING BELOW THE LINE’ - 20% of the world’s population is living in extreme poverty. That means 1.4 billion people living on around the equivalent of £1 a day. To try and experience what it is like and to try and raise money for Christian Aid, a charity which helps communities lift themselves out of poverty, Sunday Group are planning to live on just £1 a day for food and drink for 5 days. We have also been keeping a record of what we spend on other things like travel, clothes, etc. If you would like to help us raise money for Christian Aid, you can sponsor us at https://www.livebelowtheline.com/me/wellingtonsundaygroup or ask a member of Sunday Group for a sponsor form.

SCOTTISH LOVE IN ACTION - (for whom we raised money a couple of years ago with the very successful and enjoyable ‘Men in Aprons’ project) would like to give the opportunity to those who might be interested in going to work in their Home-cum-School for destitute children in Tuni, S.E India. Names are now being gathered for a group (max 14 folk) to go to Tuni from 15th -26^th November 2012. It is hoped that the main project will be to set up a library in the school - quite a challenge! The group will also be painting murals, giving sports coaching, music and crafting work-shops and English conversation, not to mention the ongoing feeding of the children! INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLUB - Friday, 18^th May at 7.30 pm will be the FINAL FRIDAY meeting of this session (please note this is a change from the original programme). We will look at events to attend during the summer and launch our programme of visits to lovely places on occasional Saturdays during June, July and August. The Club welcomes anyone from anywhere to come along to the Library which is entered from Southpark Avenue. CHRISTIAN AID SCOTLAND – is hosting two of their country managers during Christian Aid Week. Macduff Phiri (Malawi) and Andre Nsengiyumva (Rwanda and Burundi) will be sharing stories of the work being done to overcome poverty and challenge injustice, in their contexts, on Thursday, 17^th May from 7.00 to 9.00 pm in Cathcart Baptist Church, 96 Merrylee Road,G43 2RA. Andre will also be sharing reflections from a group in Burundi on the ‘Labourers in the Vineyard’ passage, Matthew 20: 1-16, a passage recently reflected on and discussed by groups across Glasgow in a series of ‘Just Scripture’ studies hosted by Christian Aid. You are very welcome to attend this event, bringing the work of Christian Aid partners close to home.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK - This runs from 13th to 19th May. Envelopes for house-to-house collection will be available to collect on Sunday, 13th May and if you can spare a couple of hours to do a street it will be much appreciated. There will also be a hot lunch in the Crypt after the service on 13th May and an opportunity to donate. For more information, speak to Donald Murray (334 9887).

WHY BELIEVE? This group are holding two conferences, with the aim of equipping and encouraging church members to give a reason for the faith that is in them in the context of the challenges to belief and witness in the contemporary world. The first conference - ‘What can I Say?’ - commending faith in a sceptical age - is on 12^th May at the Palmeston Place Church, Edinburgh, and the second conference - ‘How Can I Say It?’ - sharing faith in a post-modern age - is on 27^th October at Queen’s Park Church, Glasgow. CHURCHES TOGETHER IN THE PARK BIG PICNIC - On Sunday, 20th May from 1.00 to 4.00 pm in the Botanic Gardens. Please come and join a picnic with people from the West End Churches Together (Hillhead Baptist, Hyndland, Kelvinside-Hillhead, Lansdowne, St. John’s Renfield and Wellington). This is an opportunity for fun, games and fellowship in the open air, finishing with a ‘Big Sing’. Please bring your own food to eat and share. If it is wet, we will go to Kelvinside-Hillhead’s Hall instead.

‘GLORIA X’ will take place in Wellington on Wednesday, 20th June at 7.30 pm. This will be the last Gloria in its present form. All singers are invited to the rehearsals, which will be in Wellington at 7.30 on the evenings of Wednesday, 9th, 16th, 23rd May, Tuesday, 29th May, Wednesday, 6th June and Tuesday, 19th June. As before, there will also be a concert in Glasgow Cathedral on Wednesday, 13th June, with a rehearsal in the Cathedral on Tuesday, 12th June. The programme will begin with Parry’s great anthem ’I was Glad’. Participation is not limited to choir members. This is a chance to sing with a large choir of probably 40 to 50. ‘ALL ARE WELCOME’ - Fifteen Variations on an Inclusive Theme from Wellington Church. The sermons included here, taken from the years 2008 to 2011, touch on the subject of inclusion in various ways. These have been collated into booklet form which are available at the Traidcraft stall for a donation of £3.

‘HEART & SOUL 2012’ - A celebration for the whole Church. As mentioned in the February edition of Wellington-Lansdowne News, this event is taking place on Sunday, 20th May from 1.00 to 6.00 pm in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. CHRISTIAN AID MALAWI PARTNERSHIP PROJECT - All churches in our West End Parish Grouping, including Hillhead Baptist church, are taking part in a venture to raise £5,000 for a project in the north of Malawi. This project is taking a holistic approach to educating young people, women and religious leaders about HIV/AIDS. Each pound we raise will be matched 9 times by the Scottish Government Development Fund. A number of events are being planned which will be looking for your support. If you have any ideas or want to get involved please contact Christine Johnston (Tel: 357 5570 or email: munrowalker@ntlworld.com). 

JOINT SERVICE AT THE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL - Please note that our morning service on Sunday, 13th March will take place in the Glasgow University Chapel at 11.00 am when we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.  Creche, Sunday School and Sunday Group activities will be held at Wellington commencing 11.00 am.  Tea and coffee will be served after the service in the Woodlands Hall.

LENTEN APPEAL 2012 - Lunch on Sunday, 11th March - The Mission & Outreach Committee has chosen three projects for us to support during the Lenten Appeal: Toy Box which provides a space for children visiting relatives in Barlinnie; Borderline which works with homeless Scots in London and provides a range of services including information, advice and advocacy, accommodation and referrals to specialist agencies; Linda Norgrove Foundation which is a grant-giving trust that provides funding for women and children affected by the war in Afghanistan and was set up in memory of Scottish Aid Worker, Linda Norgrove, who was kidnapped and killed in Afghanistan. There will be speakers to talk about each of the projects during morning worship on Sunday,11^th March. This will be followed by coffee as usual and the Lenten Lunch in the Crypt which will give us all an opportunity to find out more.

MAKE MUSIC FOR MALAWI – Please note that this event to raise money for the Parish Grouping Christian Aid Partnership Project is taking place on Saturday, 17^th September. It is in Hyndland Church and although it will run from 10 until 4, Wellington’s hour is between 3pm and 4pm. We have a very varied group of performers taking part and it would be great if you could come along and support them. They are all very brave! There is a general sponsorship form on the Traidcraft stall for the choir’s item – if you haven’t already been approached by one of the performers, you can always support the choir!
